This painting was inspired by the memory of isolated roads in
Central Texas. When I was a child, one of my aunts lived on a farm near New
Braunfels, Texas. Her home was at the end of a gravel road. The dappled shade along this
path reminds me of those carefree visits in my childhood. A friend told me that
this reminds her of the rural area of South Carolina where she lived as a child.
It also
resembles the road to Kathy's home, about ten miles from Natchez, Mississippi, as it was
years ago when my husband and I went to visit for the first time. The road has been
broadened and paved since then.
As our world
becomes more modernized, these rural areas are disappearing. Soon they will exist only in
our memories.
I disregard all
evidence of people in my paintings. I prefer to emphasize the natural beauty that I see or
remember. Perhaps one of my paintings evokes a treasured memory for you. If so, I hope you
will share that memory with me.
